Attorney General Charlie Crist Press Release
Alachua County Man Arrested for Possession of Child Pornography
TALLAHASSEE - Attorney General Charlie Crist announced that an Alachua County man was arrested today on multiple charges of possession of child pornography and promoting the sexual performance of a child. Investigators discovered Zaldy Ramos Aquinde’s distribution and promotion of pornographic videos of children during an undercover online investigation conducted by Crist’s Child Predator CyberCrime Unit.
Aquinde, 36, placed pornographic videos of young girls on the internet, where they were discovered by a CyberCrime investigator who was able to trace them back to Aquinde. A search warrant was then executed at Aquinde’s Gainesville residence and his computer was seized, along with hundreds of videos of child pornography. Aquinde was arrested by officers with the Child Predator CyberCrime Unit, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, the Gainesville Police Department, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Child pornography destroys the innocence of children," said Crist. "We will continue the fight against those who prey on our children in such a heinous manner."
Law enforcement officers executing the search warrant verified that Aquinde’s computer contained the videos found online by the undercover investigator. Aquinde admitted that he knowingly possessed the pornography found on his computer. The videos were of young girls, some potentially as young as seven years old. The computer removed from the residence will undergo further forensic analysis to locate possible additional pornographic images or videos of children.
Aquinde is currently being held at the Alachua County Jail. He is charged with one count of promoting the sexual performance of a child, a second-degree felony, and five counts of possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony. If convicted on all charges, he faces up to 40 years in prison.
The Child Predator CyberCrime Unit's mission is to protect children from computer-facilitated sexual exploitation. The unit does this by working cooperatively on a statewide basis with law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to provide resources and expertise, while preventing the spread of these crimes through education and community awareness. Aquinde’s arrest is the 31st made by officers with the unit since its inception in October 2005. The Child Predator CyberCrime Unit is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) of North Florida.
